Assessor
The Cape Vincent Assessor, Rebecca Trudell, makes all the assessments for general tax or special assessment purposes in accordance with the provisions of the New York State Real Property Tax Law. Their interests and goals are directed toward developing residents understanding of, and satisfaction with, the way the New York State Real Property Tax Law is formulated, equitably and uniformly applied, and improved.
The Assessor will:
- Set up appointments to meet anyone who is not physically able to come to the Town Office to complete required forms.
- Calculate the assessed value of properties within the Town and Village of Cape Vincent.
- Review eligibility for and provide information about tax exemptions such as STAR and Enhanced STAR and Veterans exemptions.
- Maintain property transfer records.
The Assessor’s goal is to fairly assess each property. If an assessment is correct and the tax bill still seems too high, the assessor cannot change that. Complaints to the assessor must be about how property is assessed. It is up to the individual property owners to monitor their own assessments. Taxpayers who feel they are not being fairly assessed should meet with Ms. Trudell before the tentative assessment roll is established.
Office hours are Tuesday & Thursday from 8am until 12 noon, closed from noon until 1pm and 1pm until 4pm for field work or special appointments. You can reach the assessor and her assessment clerk Sheila Lawrence, by calling (315) 654-3795 x 3 or email [email protected].
